Secrets of ocean birth laid bare

By Helen Briggs
BBC News science reporter

The largest tear in the Earth's crust seen in decades, if not centuries, could carve out a new ocean in Africa, according to satellite data.

Geologists say a crack that opened up last year may eventually reach the Red Sea, isolating much of Ethiopia and Eritrea from the rest of Africa.

The 60km-long rift was initially sparked by an earthquake in September.

Follow-up observations reported in the journal Nature suggest the split is growing at an unprecedented rate.

I say they just fill out the whole thing and flood it themselves. :P

Arrested Development

02 May 2006 - 07:39 AM

Yes, this is the Arrested Development discussion page. Talk about this underrated show that got abandoned by Fox here!

Well, since the only big topic I can think of here is the bashing of Fox, I shall start more innocently.

What's your view on its brand of humour? :)

20 April 2006 - 04:02 AM

Well, so to faming, I thought one could fame when one has a post count of above 50? Or am I wrong? There is no way for me to fame at all, for some reason. Is it that the requirements have changed, or that I haven't looked closely? :/
Please help. It will be appreciated.

EDIT: Help has been received. No need to reply.

Language in forums

29 March 2006 - 08:19 AM

In this topic, I'll be discussing standards of daily forum posts I see on MapleTip.

First off, I do consider myself a SPG Nazi, so you can stop reading here if you want.

Go to most topics around MapleTip, and you will see that nearly all of them will contain at least one post that goes like this, "i tink tt e way i typ ispefctly slrite as ican r ead it who cares about som1 else look i have no puctuation whoc ares also iwan to no abt somting that has ben dicussed in all other topi below me but im a blindn rabid rabit so i wont care."

Now, the above horrifying message (If you can't read it, I apologize) has one of two points (the latter of which I believe has been discussed) in them which I would like to talk/rant about here.
- SPG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)
- Re-posting of topics (without searching)

For SPG in forum posts, I would like to make a point here. A forum is not a Instant Messanging service. You do not have to compete with each other to see who can type faster in forums. The main point of a forum is different from SMS and IM services.

The main point of a forum is to to discuss with, to inform, and to to make a point on other members. Posts like the above message are not in any of those categories. So what if you, the poster undersatnds them, and think that it is right to post like that? Will anyone take your point or your question seriously if you post like that? Will thay respect you as a fellow member?

I've seen certain members of the forum repeatedly post like rabbits on steroids, their reason being, "i mus type fas her i actualy have a diplma in english balh blah blah".

I really, in fact, do not understand why sometimes, the grammar structure of a post can be so bad that it becomes unreadable. Is our current education system so bad that that 10-year-olds (the apparant age of certain members) have no idea how to communicate in real life? Note that communication and talking has different meanings. Inane posts (which I don't want to quote here) have no purpose other than to allow the poster to talk crap, and to increase his post count and ego accordingly, but is that communication? I allow the readers to ponder.

After the rather quick rant above, in which I have not included all my flamebait (yet), I would of course, like the members of this forum to discuss! :D
