Want to take measures to make sure certain Web sites won't be accessible? Simply edit your hosts file. Easy, requires nothing else, just you inputting the URLs of the Web sites you want to block. By doing this, when they try to visit your blocked Web sites, the Web site just won't load and you'll get the generic "Cannot be found." message.

Go to:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Open up the hosts file in Notepad.

You will see the line:
127.0.0.1 localhost

Let's say I want to block Website#1.com and Website#2.com.

I add this below the mentioned line:
127.0.0.2 www.website#1.com
127.0.0.3 website#1.com
127.0.0.4 www.website#2.com
127.0.0.5 website#2.com

The reason why I listed both twice (with and without the WWWs) is because the Web sites will still be accessible if you don't block both. And you can see that to add more, you just change the last number of 127.0.0.x.

Save your changes to the hosts file, and voila, you're finished!

Yup, yup. Thanks. Worked like a Charm. I blocked some sites.

One thing, what if I want to block more than 9 sites?

Do I go like 127.0.0.10?

I've never tried more than 9 Web sites, but if you give a trial, let me know if it works. It should though. :)

you're an idiot

nobody listen to him he has no idea what he's talking about

hosts just rewrites http requests, so if you request what's on the right, it directs you to whats on the left.

All those things on the left are internal ip addresses; if you have computers on the network that have those IPs assigned, then it'll open explorer to that computer

change all those ip addresses to http://google.com or http://piv.pivpiv.dk/ or ANYTHING and then the addresses on the right will just redirect to google or You are an Idiot, or "ANYTHING". They don't all have to be different.

And fyi, each "digit" in an ip address goes up to 255, so you dont wrap left at 10. and the first 3 digits are usually the same in a home network anyway.

From frouth explaination i can vaguely answer what your trying to get at. Those work it gives u the 'Cannot show this Page' site because it cant find the computer with that ip so ending up with that. That's what i think it means.

Froth ~ This is 127.0.0.* - localhost only. Network IP ranges from 192.168.0.* or 10.0.1.* etc etc. Normally only 192 or 10, unless you assign your router to change it to 127.0.0.* (but even then, it'll think it was itself connecting to itself).
