:halloween:

I reluctantly went to my graduation convocation today. If it weren't for my family, I'd have skipped it without a doubt, because symbolic gestures like that don't mean much to me. People get oddly defensive and pushy when I say this, though. "But you've been studying for years just for this moment! It's the highlight of your academic career!"

Errm... No? And by academic career, you mean, my not-particularly-outstanding performance at a not-particularly-difficult major, where I had about a 50% attendance rate for my classes (maybe lower)? Plus convocation was on the campus where I had one course, so I wasn't exactly bidding the place a tearful farewell. Not that I would have for my main campus, either.

I got my piece of paper, so that's nice, I guess.

Out of "scientific curiosity," someone gave me these gummy candies that happened to be special. Special in the sense that, for about half an hour, I felt like I was in an elevator that was slowly going up. It was exactly as mundane as it sounds. And there you have the height of my radical escapades.

I've been on this site for over half my life, what the heck. Still slowly trying to beat Antagonist's post count...

Posts broke for a few days. Finally, I logged onto Paypal to bribe Stephen with pennies. Posts work now, horray!

I changed jobs for money, even though money has never made me happy.

So far, I get paid too much to read books and drool at my monitor. I know some people would love to have a constant stream of nothing to do, but for me it is 100% the worst part of the job. Bloody corporate do-nothing purgatory! While it takes some technical chops when the occasion arises, there's otherwise too much opportunity to contemplate the meaningless passage of time. It's so bad for my brain.

Folks usually want to know the details of my departure. There's no sense in being coy, so: I started at 40K at my previous job, got raises up to 60K in a year. Vancouver hasn't really caught up with the rest of the western tech industry, but even then, that is Pretty Low. I got tired of the catch-up games and the politicking in an office that seemed unaware of the market. Then some giant company waved $55/hour at me so I was like kbye guys.

I'm ~12K CAD into GME by proxy after sending funds to my good MapleTip friends in the US. Processing times here in Canadialand are too slow for me to keep up in person--I've got a 5K deposit that'll clear on... Monday. I wanted to be 20K in, really: for me, that's on the cusp of "just dangerous enough, just enough to make a real difference." Moon or die, let's see what happens. :D

[edit] Came pretty close to touching the sun, but was just a day too late. Slightly sad now, which is surprising, as I had expected to feel dead inside about money.

So I lost around $15,000 from that misadventure!

To preface, it wasn't money I couldn't afford to lose. I'm doing alright. I haven't sold everything yet, but I did let my buddy scavenge the corpse of my $6K USD investment, which I have written off as a total loss. (I had promised that I wouldn't make it stressful, and unfortunately they had ended up investing alongside me, so there it is.) Tax deductions for years on that one, lol. Expensive lesson.

The grand bet: on Friday market close, there was a serious effort to bring the price down, but another party forced it back up to a price that caused many of the shorted shares to be margin called. With that among other reasons, I supposed there would be an upswing the week following. I held through the weekend, bought more on Monday(!!), and paid dearly for it. As it turned out, Melvin was stupid, but not that stupid.

Some things I realized on a personal level:

- When you have $15,000, it's kinda just there. Losing $15,000, however, is pretty terrible.

- I have no sense of scale on my spending. My personal expenses are usually about 5% of what I make, and I don't think about it.

- Stocks can easily be worse than any shopping problem.

I'm still in the game btw. Reminds me of when I started playing Ys VI: the very first thing I did was die, but eventually I beat it. Maybe that's just my bullheadedness refusing to accept that there's anything I can't do as long as I put my mind to it. See you next time when I'm down (or maybe up) a few more grand.

Market taking a dump pretty much from the moment I got in lol.

5EFKi0y.png

This is just my personal account, the one where I got omegapunked by the bad Monday trade, and subsequently punked some more by market pullbacks every time that Chairman Powell farts. In addition to this little snippet, I have 3K USD or so doing who knows what in my buddy's broker app, and the ~5K USD losses that have been realized by my other good friend. Better yet, people're saying that there's still a ways down from here. One may wonder, is it time to run? I haven't been with the business that long, just long enough to realize that it's a constant struggle against your (usually incorrect, always detrimental) fight-or-flight instincts. That said, I have a few more grand waiting in the wings.

Today, I fixed myself a slice of garlic avocado toast with smoked salmon, and I greatly enjoyed it.

Real confession: I have somehow maintained a charade where all my coworkers think I'm amazing, even though in actuality I only work around 3-5 hours a day, and the rest of my time lately has been spent on watching myself lose money. Tbf ever since I got hired, I have done exactly one project that was worth a few brain cells. It may never happen again while I'm here. People who jump for more only bash their head against a ceiling, and somewhere along the way, I decided I've done that enough times. Being able to say "I've taken naps worth more money than that" is kinda funny tho (and I fully admit, trashy).

tfw you find a fanfiction that is quite clearly based on your fanfiction but it's porn

Actually a true story btw. There was a fanfiction sporting what I thought was an awfully uncanny tagline, so I skimmed the whole thing once, as you do. love was surreal, particularly seeing the odd phrase lifted out of my writing. According to that story, being abducted is a-OKKK as long as the abductor is super handsome. And the NSFW content... ahaha please give me the brain bleach and start with the eyeballs. Now, it's not so much that I mean to pearl-clutch here, but I found that the frightful prose really compounded the unnerving experience of finding a NSFW derivative of something you made (even if the thing you made was also a derivative).

Yes, it can be taken as a compliment, and I recognize that, but talk about a strange time, lol.
