This will be an announcement in several of the most frequented sections so that more people will see it. Please keep in mind that this is based off an existing rule that you agreed to when you signed up for MapleTip, and we are not obligated to remove any warnings for breaking this rule, especially if you claim not to have known about it.

Lately, far too many people have had oversized signatures. This normally wouldn't be a problem, but it is obvious when people's signatures take up more space on a page than anyone else's or their actual posts.

The Rule
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUOTE
12. Signatures (10% warning per incident)

Your TOTAL signature length may not exceed 600 x 360. Please note, this rule also applies to text. Your signature will be automatically deleted without warning and without the original signature if you do not comply with this rule.

What the Rule Means
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The rule states that EVERYTHING in your signature, including all text and images, must not total over 600 pixels WIDE (that is, left to right) and 360 pixels HIGH (top to bottom). Remember that pixels are measured width x height, not the other way around.

Furthermore, observe the last line: "Your signature will be automatically deleted without warning and without the original signature if you do not comply with this rule." This means that we can and probably will delete your ENTIRE signature without leaving any part of it or sending you the original code. Remember that we can't do everything for you and that you, as a member, must take the initiative to at least keep your signatures clean (not only clean as in worksafe, but also clear of excessive content).

This rule exists to avoid problems with people having to scroll endlessly down a page.

How We Notice
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
We can usually tell your signatures are oversized simply by looking at them. If they take up an obnoxious amount of space or are clearly filled with too many pictures, goals, etc., they show how obviously oversized they are.

What You SHOULD Do
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although the rule states that 600 x 360 is the maximum, you are encouraged to use your common sense.

For example, 600 pixels would stretch the board and distort your posts from the layout - to avoid this, keep your signature within the width limits of the board itself. Check this by viewing your own posts. If you are unsure of whether your signature distorts the layout, ask someone reasonable or another moderator/administrator, or do not use that signature..

Another example of using your common sense would be not to get too close to the 360 pixel height limit. Some ways of avoiding this are: not endlessly listing your goals (in real-life, MapleStory, or anywhere else), not having multiple large banners, not using wallpapers as your signature, etc. If you are unsure of whether your signature is too high, ask someone reasonable or another moderator/administrator, or do not use that signature..

Some Ways of Checking
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Use your common sense. If you're stacking banners or images top to bottom, add up their pixel heights together. Ask yourself, "Do all of these add up to 360 or less, or do they go above that limit?"

Go into Paint, screenshot your signature, crop it out from the rest of the page, fit it to the whole canvas, and measure the pixels via Image > Attributes (or press CTRL + E). There are other methods of measuring your signature, as well.

Summary
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Read the rule and obey it
  • Pixels are measured width x height (left-to-right by top-to-bottom)
  • We may delete your entire signature if it's oversized
  • Avoid oversizing your signature by not putting too many images, listing endless goals, etc.
  • Check your own signature size
  • If you're unsure, it's probably better not to use it
  • Use your common sense
  • Remember that we can't do everything for you and that you, as a member, must take the initiative to at least keep your signatures clean (not only clean as in worksafe, but also clear of excessive content)
Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please remember that MapleTip's signature rules are already very generous. Whereas other forums usually don't even let you past 250 pixels, MapleTip allows you to go to 360. However, for your sake, our sake, and the sake of others, it's best not to go up to the limit. Rather, put in what you need and don't add anything else in excessively.

Remember that these are SIGNATURES, not your personal webpages or biographies. Signatures are meant for your own personal expression and are put at the ends of all of your posts (unless you disable your own signature through the post options). However, a limit must be set. People should not have to scroll down endlessly to view posts or be attacked by image overlimit, but they should not have to be bothered to disable signature viewing on the board.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Update: As of 12th November 2007, the signature limit has been changed to 560x360.

Thank you for reading.
